If you would like a more light-hearted story about a boarding school, you might try "And Gladly Teach," a humorous/satirical account written by a teacher (me).

Did you know that Johnson was a compulsive calculator--he recommended the kind of arithmetic you are doing in this post to everyone, including Hester Thrale's daughter Queeney, saying it would save their sanity! xoH.

Very enjoyable notes on Dr Johnson. I'm a big fan, and wrote papers on him while doing post-graduate study at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. Am also a big fan of Simon Winchester.

all the best,
J.D.

Keep up the good work. It is of real importance for me for i happen to be reading it for my college exams. The most iportant thing is that it not only helps me in exams, but also a great inspiration for i love literature.

Excellent story--I watched a YouTube clip with Winchester describing the Needham book (and doing a phenomenal job of summing it up), and he certainly seemed to be a rather charming chap. You'd like the Needham book. I thought about the connection between books on scholarship and books on books when I read your post on 84 Charing Cross Road today. Not very far apart. Thanks for stopping by--it's been quiet around here, my own fault of course.

Did I tell you about the time I sat in a reading in a bookstore in Rhinebeck, NY, and this guy with a cool accent in the back of the room asked a question at the end, and it turned out to be Simon Winchester? That was kind of fun. I really liked The Professor and the Madman, and although I haven't put it this way before, I like books about scholarship too.

I've really enjoyed your blog. Have you read "The Rector of Justin" by Louis Auchincloss? I read it when it first came out (admittedly I was very young) and found it enchanting and addictive.
